About this tour

This session covers the discovery of the oldest worked gold found anywhere, held today in Varna's archaeological museum. You see the museum building from the forecourt and the marker at the original burial site, with the discovery's story explained from outside since the pieces themselves stay behind glass. It stays on this one find.

I explain the sequence of the 1972 discovery slowly, since the dates involved tend to surprise most guests. Questions about early metalworking come up often, and I answer what I can from years of reading on it.

This suits anyone with a real interest in early history and archaeology. It also works well paired with the Roman Thermae session for a fuller sweep of the city's past.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Varna before heading out.

  2. Archaeological Museum Forecourt 21 min

The camera shows the museum building from outside, and I explain how the Varna Necropolis gold was found nearby in 1972, worked around 4,600 BC.

  3. Necropolis Site Marker 21 min

You see the marker at the burial site itself, and I point out why this find changed how archaeologists date early metalworking in Europe.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Varna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Banitsa (filo pastry with cheese) and Vazrazhdane, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Sofia time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
