Modern islands where ships once docked, live
Highlights
- Modern canals built where ships once docked
- A layout that echoes the older canal ring
- A footbridge designed like an old drawbridge
- Several well-known architects side by side
- A fuller look at this side of the water
About this tour
This session covers two artificial harbour islands redeveloped from working docks into striking modern neighbourhoods, a side of Amsterdam that looks nothing like its postcard image. You see narrow canals deliberately echoing the old centre on one island, a footbridge linking the two built in the same spirit, and then bolder, more varied architecture on the next. It shows how the city keeps reinventing its own edges.
We walk between the two islands at a steady pace, since the contrast between them is part of the point. I explain the design choices behind specific buildings and the bridge itself as we pass them.
It suits anyone interested in contemporary architecture and how cities repurpose old industrial land. It pairs well with the ferry session to EYE for a fuller look at this side of the water.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.
-
Java-eiland 21 min
You see narrow modern canals and housing blocks built where cargo ships once docked, and I explain how the layout deliberately echoes the older canal ring across the water.
-
Bridge Between Islands 21 min
The camera crosses one of the modern footbridges linking the two islands, and I point out how its design deliberately echoes older Amsterdam drawbridges.
-
KNSM-eiland 21 min
We finish on a neighbouring island where the architecture is bolder and more varied, and I point out buildings by several different well-known architects standing side by side.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and Jordaan, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
