Ara Pacis and the Mausoleum of Augustus
Highlights
- Reliefs meant to be read in sequence
- An altar built to celebrate a reign
- An emperor's own tomb, close by
- Two monuments telling one deliberate story
- Ancient self-presentation, explained plainly
About this tour
This session moves along the Ara Pacis, an altar built to celebrate peace under Emperor Augustus, reading its carved reliefs the way an ancient visitor originally would have. You see the procession of figures in sequence and then the emperor's own mausoleum nearby, with both monuments read as one deliberate story. It is a session about how the emperor wanted himself remembered.
I move along the reliefs slowly, following the sequence rather than jumping between details, and take questions throughout. I send a short note afterwards with more on the mausoleum's long history since.
This suits anyone interested in ancient propaganda and self-presentation rather than only ruins. It also pairs well with a session on Piazza del Popolo nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
