Derinkuyu, the underground city, from the entrance level
Highlights
- A stairway leading underground
- Stables and storage on the first level
- A shaft carrying air deep below
- A chamber built for group gatherings
- A city built to shelter thousands
About this tour
This session moves through the upper levels of Derinkuyu, from the entrance stairway to a wide communal room further down. You see the first stairway leading underground, a ventilation shaft running through the levels, and finally a chamber large enough for group gatherings. Together the stops explain how an underground city actually functioned.
I begin with a sound check at the entrance, then we move down level by level while you ask questions about the engineering. I pause at the ventilation shaft a little longer, since it is easy to underestimate how it worked. Afterwards I send a short note on the layout we covered.
This suits anyone interested in ancient engineering and practical problem solving rather than only surface landmarks. It also suits a traveller deciding whether to visit the site afterwards.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cappadocia before heading out.
-
Derinkuyu Entrance Level 21 min
The camera looks down the first stairway leading underground. I explain how this level alone would have held stables and storage rooms for the community above.
-
Ventilation Shaft 21 min
You see one of the vertical shafts running down through the levels. I point out how fresh air reached rooms many metres below the surface without any modern equipment.
-
Communal Room 21 min
From a wider chamber, the camera shows a room large enough for group gatherings. I explain what this space was likely used for when the city sheltered thousands of people at once.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Cappadocia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dried fruit and nuts and Uçhisar, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Istanbul time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
