A church, a mosque, the same building
Highlights
- One building, two faiths recorded
- A bell tower beside a minaret
- Rulers changed, the building stayed
- A square that kept its old plan
- History read straight off a wall
About this tour
This session focuses on a single building in Splantzia that carries both a bell tower and a minaret, a tangible record of the town's changing rulers. You see how a church became a mosque and then a church again, an unusually direct piece of layered history in one structure. It stays within the square throughout.
I explain the building's history stop by stop, pointing out which parts of the structure date to which period, and take questions as we go. The pace stays measured given how much history sits in one small building.
This suits anyone fascinated by how architecture reflects political history. It also pairs well with the after-dark square session on a different visit.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Chania before heading out.
-
Church of Agios Nikolaos exterior 15 min
You see the same building carrying both a bell tower and a minaret, and I explain how it changed hands between faiths as rulers of the town changed.
-
Splantzia Square context 15 min
The camera pulls back to the square around the church, and I explain how the neighbourhood kept its old street plan even as the building above it changed.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Chania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dakos and Old Town, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
