Inside the courtyard of Carlo V's castle
Highlights
- A Norman keep inside a larger fortress
- Walls built to withstand cannon fire
- The join between two building phases
- A moat that once ringed the whole castle
- Centuries of military building, side by side
About this tour
This session explores Castello Carlo V from its outer moat to the main courtyard, where a much older Norman keep sits inside a far larger fortification. You see the join between the two building phases up close and learn why the castle grew so much larger in the 1500s. Filming covers the moat and the accessible outer courtyard.
I walk the moat first, then move into the courtyard for a slower look at where the two building periods meet. I answer questions along the way and send a short timeline of the castle's construction afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in military architecture or how older buildings get absorbed into newer ones. It pairs naturally with the amphitheatre session for a wider sense of Lecce's layered history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
