Richmond Park's deer at dawn
Highlights
- Red and fallow deer since the 1600s
- A royal hunting ground still grazed today
- Dawn mist across open grassland
- Seasonal changes in deer behaviour
- A decade of early mornings explained
About this tour
This session walks Richmond Park at first light, when the deer are most active and the mist often still sits across the grassland. It covers the park's origin as a 17th-century royal hunting ground and how the deer's behaviour shifts through the year. It is a calm, nature-focused session best suited to early risers.
We start with the open parkland and its history, then move towards wherever the herd is grazing that particular morning. Questions about the deer and their seasonal behaviour come up naturally, and I answer from a decade of early mornings here. I close with a note on which months to avoid if you plan to walk closer yourself.
It suits nature lovers and early risers who want a genuinely calm start to the day. It also suits photographers, since the dawn light here rarely disappoints.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.
-
Open parkland 21 min
The camera holds on the wide open grassland at dawn, and I explain how the park has kept both red and fallow deer since it was enclosed as a royal hunting ground in the 17th century.
-
Grazing herd 21 min
Further out, you see deer grazing in the morning mist, and I point out how the seasonal rut in autumn changes their behaviour noticeably from the calmer months.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Soho, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
