1866 Street, stall by stall
Highlights
- A market street generations old
- Spices grown just outside the city
- A cheese stall known since childhood
- Butchers lined up in a row
- Produce explained, smell included
About this tour
This session walks the length of the Central Market on 1866 Street, showing the butchers, spice stalls and cheese counters that have run here for generations. You hear which produce comes from just outside the city, explained by someone the vendors have known since he was a boy. It stays on the market street throughout.
I move slowly past each stall, describing what is on display and answering questions as they come, then linger longest at the cheese stall my family has used for years. Nothing tangible reaches the screen, so I describe every smell in detail instead.
This suits anyone curious about Cretan food culture before eating it elsewhere. It also works well early in a visit as an introduction to local produce.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later
Not included
- Food and drinks shown on camera
- Travel to the city
Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Heraklion before heading out.
-
Butchers and spice stalls 15 min
You see the market's butchers and spice stalls in a row, and I explain which spices are grown just outside the city rather than shipped in.
-
Cheese stall corner 15 min
The camera stops at the cheese stall I have bought from since childhood, and I describe which cheeses are made in the villages nearby and how they differ.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Heraklion: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cretan raki (tsikoudia) and Old Town / Lions Square, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
