About this tour

This session looks at one of Reykjavik's most photographed streets, painted in rainbow colours leading up toward the city's landmark church. You see how a temporary festival piece became a permanent fixture, and how the coloured road changes the light on the shopfronts around it. It moves at an easy pace, timed for good afternoon light.

After a short sound check at the base of the street, I walk up stop by stop, explaining the street's history and pointing out details in the shopfronts as we climb. I take questions live and send a short note afterwards on the galleries along the way for anyone who wants to explore further.

It suits anyone who enjoys colour and street art, and anyone who wants a lighter, more visual session between heavier historical ones.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Reykjavik before heading out.

  2. The rainbow-painted road 15 min

The camera follows the street's painted rainbow road surface, and I explain how the design began as a temporary festival piece before the city made it permanent.

  3. Shopfronts leading up to the church 15 min

You see the shops and galleries lining the street toward Hallgrímskirkja, and I point out how the colour of the road changes the light on the buildings around it.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Reykjavik: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Hot dogs (pylsur) and 101 Reykjavik, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Reykjavik time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
