Cramond, the island you reach on foot at low tide
Highlights
- A village of white harbour cottages
- A causeway that only clears at low tide
- Wartime structures on the island
- An anti-submarine boom in the water
- A walk timed by the sea itself
About this tour
This session walks from Cramond village across the tidal causeway to Cramond Island, timed so the crossing is actually possible. You see white harbour cottages, the causeway stretching out over the mud, and wartime structures still standing on the island itself. Graham explains the tides that govern the whole route and the island's use during two world wars.
After a sound check in the village, the walk follows the tide out to the island in stages, with time for questions at each stop. Graham answers as you go and sends the tide times afterwards for anyone planning their own crossing.
It suits anyone who enjoys a proper walk with a genuine sense of adventure, and works well for those interested in wartime history. It also appeals to families with older children.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
