  • A quay once busy with barges
  • How a river shaped the city's growth
  • The Neckar, bridge by bridge

About this tour

This walk compares Heidelberg's two central bridges and the river between them. You see the fortified towers of the older stone bridge, the plainer newer crossing built as the city expanded, and a quay where river traffic has changed completely over a century. It traces how the Neckar has shaped the city's growth.

I move steadily downstream from bridge to bridge, keeping the river in frame throughout. I take questions on the engineering and history of each crossing and send a short note afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how a river shapes a city's layout over time. It also works well paired with a Neckarwiese session for a fuller riverside picture.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Heidelberg before heading out.

  2. Old Bridge Gate Towers 17 min

You see the fortified stone towers guarding the older of the city's two central crossings.

  3. Theodor-Heuss-Brücke 17 min

The camera moves downstream to the newer bridge, and I explain why it was built as the city grew beyond its old walls.

  4. Neckar Boat Quay 17 min

From the quay, I point out how river traffic has shifted from barges to pleasure boats over the last century.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Heidelberg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Baden Riesling and Handschuhsheim, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Questions about this tour

What will the session cover?

The guide walks through Heidelberg, showing you Old Bridge Gate Towers and Theodor-Heuss-Brücke live on camera, plus whatever else you would like to see.

What happens if my connection drops?

Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?

Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

How it works

  • You get one join link after booking.
  • Join from any device: phone, tablet or laptop.
  • We use Google Meet for the session, with the link sent once you book. I carry the phone along the river myself, keeping it level so the water and light read well on screen.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
