Troldhaugen, Grieg's villa above the fjord
Highlights
- A composer's villa above the fjord
- Twenty-two years of work in one house
- A hut built for composing alone
- Grieg's Bergen, beyond the concert hall
- A garden that shaped a body of music
About this tour
This session walks the garden at Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg's villa above the fjord outside Bergen. You see the wooden house from outside and the small composing hut set apart from it near the water. Jorunn connects the setting directly to the music Grieg wrote here across more than two decades.
She moves slowly through the garden, since the view over the fjord is much of the point, and pauses longest at the composing hut. Questions about specific pieces of music come up regularly, and she answers with detail from her training.
This suits anyone interested in classical music or Norwegian culture beyond Bergen's harbour sights. It follows naturally from Jorunn's call about the KODE museums back in the city.

The camera circles Edvard Grieg's villa from the garden, a wooden house above the fjord where the composer lived and worked for the last twenty-two years of his life.
-
The composer's hut 21 min
Further down toward the water, I point out the small hut Grieg used for composing alone, deliberately set apart from the main house.

Time to ask anything about Bergen: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cloudberries (multer) and Nordnes, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
