About this tour

This session covers the 1991 siege of Dubrovnik from the fortress on Srđ hill above the old town. The camera moves through the fortress courtyard and its small war museum, out to the view over the old town roofs and the Elaphiti islands, then down the old serpentine path while the guide shares personal accounts from that winter. It stays close to lived memory rather than a general history lesson.

After the sound check, the walk follows the fortress from courtyard to viewpoint to the path down, with the guide leaving space for questions about the siege as they come up naturally. A short list of sources for anyone who wants to read further goes out afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in recent Balkan history told by someone who was there, rather than a textbook account. It also suits anyone who has visited Dubrovnik and wondered what the hill above the walls actually saw.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Dubrovnik before heading out.

  2. Imperial fortress on Srđ 21 min

From the courtyard of the fortress on Srđ hill, now home to a small war museum, the camera looks out while the guide explains what the position meant during the 1991 siege.

  3. View over the Elaphiti islands 21 min

From the same hilltop, the camera takes in the old town's roofs and the Elaphiti islands beyond, and the guide describes the handful of defenders who held this front line through the siege.

  4. The serpentine path down 21 min

Walking down the old zigzag path from the fortress, the guide shares personal accounts from the siege winter, memories from people who lived through it rather than facts from a plaque.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Dubrovnik: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dalmatian pršut and Ploče, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Zagreb time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
