Le Panier's steep lanes and old squares
Highlights
- Murals down a steep old lane
- A square on an ancient Greek site
- An almshouse courtyard with an oval dome
- Marseille's oldest quarter, close up
- Washing lines strung between windows
About this tour
This walk follows the steep lanes of Le Panier, the oldest quarter in Marseille, from a mural-covered street to Place de Lenche and the courtyard of the Vieille Charité. You see how narrow and layered the quarter still is and what excavations have found beneath one of its squares. It is a route built for looking up as much as ahead.
We move slowly given the steps and narrow turns, pausing longest at the Vieille Charité courtyard. Questions come in throughout and I will double back for a second look at any mural or doorway someone asks about. A short list of what we saw follows the call.
This suits anyone who likes wandering old streets more than ticking off landmarks. It also works well before or after a session down at the Old Port for contrast.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Marseille before heading out.
-
Rue du Panier 17 min
The camera follows one of the steep lanes of Le Panier, walls covered in murals and washing lines strung between windows. I point out how the street plan has barely changed since the quarter was the city's oldest.
-
Place de Lenche 17 min
You reach a small square built on the site of the ancient Greek marketplace, the oldest recorded gathering point in the city. I explain what has been found underneath it during excavations.
-
Vieille Charité courtyard 17 min
The camera looks into the arcaded courtyard of a seventeenth century former almshouse, now a cultural centre. I point out the chapel's unusual oval dome rising above the surrounding galleries.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Marseille: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pieds et paquets and Le Panier, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
