About this tour

This session walks through Jericho, the Victorian terraced neighbourhood just north of the city centre, from its cafe-lined streets to the quieter canal towpath at its edge. It covers the area's industrial origins and the narrowboats still moored along the water today. It shows a residential, less touristy side of Oxford close to the colleges.

We start along Walton Street with the terraces and their history, then walk towards the canal for a calmer finish. Questions about the neighbourhood's independent shops and cafes come up naturally, and I answer from my own years of living nearby. I close with a note on which cafes are worth returning to.

It suits anyone who wants a residential, everyday Oxford alongside the university sights. It also suits repeat visitors looking for something beyond the standard college route.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.

  2. Walton Street terraces 21 min

The camera moves along a row of Victorian terraced houses, and I explain how the neighbourhood grew up around the university press and the ironworks that once stood here.

  3. Canal towpath 21 min

The route ends on the Oxford Canal towpath, and I point out the narrowboats moored along it and how the canal predates the railway that later competed with it.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Oxford marmalade and Jericho, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
