About this tour

This session climbs the tower of the university church for a view over the market square and the college roofs beyond, told by a guide who grew up on the street just behind it. It covers the stair itself, largely unchanged since the 15th century, and the view it opens up at the top. It combines a short climb with a genuinely useful vantage point.

We start at the base of the tower with a short sound check, then climb steadily, pausing partway for breath and questions. At the top I take time identifying the different college spires and buildings spread out below. I finish with a note on the best time of day for clear light over the rooftops.

It suits viewers who want an overview of the city's layout rather than a single building in isolation. It also suits anyone who has already walked several colleges and wants to see how they all fit together.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cambridge before heading out.

  2. Tower stair 21 min

The camera follows the narrow stone stair up the tower, and I explain how the climb has changed little since the church was rebuilt in the 15th century.

  3. View from the top 21 min

From the top, you see the market square directly below and the college roofs spreading out beyond it, and I point out which spires belong to which colleges.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Cambridge: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cambridge burnt cream and Mill Road, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
