  • A village beneath Arthur's Seat
  • One of Edinburgh's oldest kirks
  • Still water and reeds at the loch
  • A protected bird sanctuary
  • The hill seen from below for once

About this tour

This session moves through Duddingston village to the loch itself, sitting quietly at the foot of Arthur's Seat. You see stone cottages, an old kirk still in regular use, and the still water of the loch with the hill rising directly behind it. Eilidh explains why this small area is protected as a bird sanctuary.

After a short sound check in the village, the session settles by the loch for a longer, quieter stretch, with time for questions throughout. Eilidh answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the birds most commonly seen there.

It suits anyone who wants a genuinely quiet session away from the busier parts of the city, and works well for birdwatchers. It also appeals to those who enjoy Arthur's Seat from below rather than climbing it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Edinburgh before heading out.

  2. Duddingston village 15 min

The camera moves through a small village of stone cottages, one of the quietest corners of the city. Eilidh points out the old kirk, one of the oldest still in regular use in Edinburgh.

  3. The loch 15 min

The camera settles on the still water of Duddingston Loch, reeds along its edge and Arthur's Seat rising directly behind. Eilidh explains why the loch is protected as a bird sanctuary.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Edinburgh: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Haggis, neeps and tatties and Leith, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
