About this tour

This session walks Belem's riverside monuments, from the Jeronimos Monastery's cloister to Belem Tower further along the water. You see the cloister's carved arches, the church entrance marking Vasco da Gama's tomb, and finally the tower itself on the riverbank. I worked as a guide inside the monastery for years before moving to video sessions, so the dates and details here are ones I know closely.

We start with a sound check outside the cloister, then move stop by stop toward the tower, pausing at each for questions about the Age of Discoveries. I send a short list of names and dates once the session ends.

It suits anyone interested in Portugal's maritime history and Manueline architecture specifically, and first-time visitors deciding how much time to spend in Belem. This session views the cloister from outside its walls rather than filming the interior.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. The monastery cloister 21 min

The camera moves through the Jeronimos Monastery's cloister from outside its walls, and I explain how the Manueline style mixes maritime motifs into the stonework.

  3. Vasco da Gama's tomb marker 21 min

We stop by the church entrance where Vasco da Gama's tomb is marked, and I explain the monastery's link to the voyages it was built to commemorate.

  4. Belem Tower 21 min

We finish at Belem Tower on the riverbank, and I point out the carved details on its facade that mix Manueline and Moorish influences.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Grilled sardines (sardinhas assadas) and Alfama, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
