About this tour

This session looks at one of Galway's newer landmarks, a mid-20th-century cathedral built on the site of the city's old prison, seen alongside the river running past its grounds. You see the scale of the dome and the riverside setting that replaced a very different earlier use of the site. It stays outdoors, moving at an easy pace along the water.

After a short sound check by the river, I walk the grounds stop by stop, explaining the building's design and the site's earlier history as each part comes into view. I answer questions live and send a short note afterwards on the cathedral's design for anyone who wants to know more.

It suits anyone interested in 20th-century architecture, and anyone who enjoys a quieter riverside session away from the busier streets.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Galway before heading out.

  2. Galway Cathedral exterior and dome 15 min

The camera takes in the cathedral's copper dome, and I explain how the building was completed only in 1965, on the site of the city's old prison.

  3. The riverside path beside the Corrib 15 min

You see the river running alongside the cathedral grounds, and I point out how the site's earlier use as a gaol shaped the choice of location.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Galway: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Guinness and Latin Quarter, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Dublin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
