About this tour

This session covers the Colonne di San Lorenzo, one of the few visible traces of Roman Milan, and the basilica behind them. You see the ancient columns standing apart from the church, then look at the basilica's facade, where Roman and later material sit in the same walls. It is a short session on a city that is rarely thought of as Roman.

We start with a sound check by the columns, since the square in front stays lively especially in the evenings. I move to the basilica for the second stop and take questions about the building's layered history as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone with an interest in ancient history who assumes Milan has little of it left to see. It also works well paired with a session on the city's Renaissance landmarks.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Milan before heading out.

  2. Colonne di San Lorenzo 15 min

The camera takes in the row of ancient Roman columns standing in front of the church, and I explain how they were moved here from an older building centuries ago.

  3. Basilica di San Lorenzo facade 15 min

We step up to the basilica itself, and I point out the mix of Roman and later material built into the same walls.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Milan: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ossobuco and Brera, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
