About this tour

This session climbs Arthur's Seat before sunrise, an extinct volcano inside Holyrood Park that gives the best view over the whole city. You pass Salisbury Crags on the way up, the ruined walls of St Anthony's Chapel above St Margaret's Loch, and reach the summit as the light comes up over the Firth of Forth. It is a quiet, early start rather than a busy daytime climb.

The call opens with a sound check in the dark, then follows the path up at a steady pace, stopping at each viewpoint as the sky changes colour. There is time to ask questions once the guide reaches the top, and a short list of what was visible from the summit is sent on afterwards.

This suits early risers and anyone who wants to see Edinburgh from above without the climb themselves. It also suits those who have done the walk before and want to watch the sunrise again from somewhere else entirely.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Edinburgh before heading out.

  2. Salisbury Crags 21 min

The camera moves along Salisbury Crags as the light comes up, the exposed rock face that convinced an early geologist the earth was far older than people then believed.

  3. St Anthony's Chapel ruins 21 min

Higher up, the guide passes the ruined walls of St Anthony's Chapel above St Margaret's Loch, the water below still dark while the sky over the city starts to lighten.

  4. The summit views 21 min

At the summit, the sunrise reaches across the Firth of Forth and the Pentland Hills while the guide points out the landmarks spread out below, from the Old Town to the sea.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Edinburgh: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cullen skink and New Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
