Leipzig Zoo beyond Gondwanaland
Highlights
- Older cages rebuilt as open habitats
- A research programme behind the enclosures
- Great apes studied alongside visitors
- Leipzig Zoo's quieter corners
- A second look beyond the rainforest hall
About this tour
This session looks at Leipzig Zoo beyond its famous indoor rainforest, from the outdoor big cat enclosures to the Pongoland great ape house. You see how older, smaller cages have been redesigned into larger habitats over recent years. The session finishes at the ape house, with a look at the zoo's ongoing research alongside its public displays.
We start with a short sound check near the first enclosure. I move at an easy pace between the two stops and take questions about the animals and the zoo's research work throughout. Afterwards I send a short note on the programmes mentioned.
This suits anyone who wants a fuller picture of the zoo beyond Gondwanaland alone. It also works well as a follow-up to the rainforest session.

The big cat enclosures 15 min
The camera moves along the outdoor enclosures, and I point out how the zoo has redesigned older cages into larger, more natural habitats over recent years.
-
The Pongoland great ape house 15 min
We stop at the ape enclosure, and I explain the zoo's long-running research programme studying great ape behaviour alongside its public displays.

Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Leipzig: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Gose (a sour, salted wheat beer brewed locally) and Südvorstadt, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
