Fantoft, a stave church rebuilt after fire
Highlights
- A dragon-headed roofline, stacked in wood
- A twelfth-century design, rebuilt after fire
- Norway's stave church style, explained
- A hill above the city's rooftops
- History rebuilt close to its original form
About this tour
This session circles Fantoft Stave Church, a reconstructed medieval-style church on a hill above Bergen. You see the dark, dragon-headed roofline typical of Norway's stave churches from several angles outside. Kristoffer explains both the church's original medieval design and the fire that destroyed it in 1992.
He moves slowly around the building, since the carved details reward a closer look than most viewers expect. Questions about the fire and the decision to rebuild come up on nearly every session.
This suits anyone interested in Norwegian architecture and history beyond Bergen's harbour. It closes out Kristoffer's three sessions with the oldest style of building in the group, even though this particular structure is recent.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
