About this tour

This walk follows part of the circuit around the Old Town's fortified walls, one of the best preserved sets of medieval defences in Europe. Grigoris shows the grassy former moat, one of the old gates, and a restored bastion offering a wide view along the walls. He explains how the defences were built up over centuries as siege technology changed.

Grigoris checks his connection at the start of the moat path before walking its length, pointing out the scale of the walls as he goes. He answers questions about specific gates and bastions as he reaches them. A short list of what was seen follows the call.

This suits travellers interested in medieval military architecture who want to see the walls as a whole rather than in passing. It also works well as an orientation walk around the edge of the Old Town.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rhodes before heading out.

  2. The moat path 17 min

Grigoris walks the grassy former moat that circles the Old Town, the camera catching the scale of the fortified walls rising on one side.

  3. A defensive gate 17 min

At one of the old gates into the walled city, he points out the thickness of the stone and the narrow approach designed to slow down any attacking force.

  4. A bastion viewpoint 17 min

From the top of a restored bastion, the camera takes in a wide stretch of the walls curving away in both directions, with the Old Town's rooftops visible just beyond.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Rhodes: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Melekouni (sesame and honey sweet) and New Town (Neo Chora), worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 11 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
