  • Context before the paintings themselves

About this tour

This session looks at Musée Matisse from the outside, the seventeenth century Genoese villa it occupies and the olive grove surrounding it. You see how much older the building and the trees are than the collection they now house, and how the light through the olives echoes the paintings inside. It is a short session about setting rather than the artworks themselves.

We spend time at the facade before moving into the grove, since the light changes noticeably between the two. I answer questions about the building or Matisse's life here as they come up. A short note on the collection follows the call.

This suits anyone with an interest in art history who wants the context around a museum rather than just its contents. It also works well before or after visiting the collection yourself.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nice before heading out.

  2. The Genoese villa 21 min

The camera looks up at the seventeenth century red villa that houses the museum, a building far older than the collection inside it. I explain how Matisse came to spend the last decades of his life in this exact neighbourhood.

  3. The olive grove 21 min

Around the building, you see the old olive grove the villa still sits within, trees far older than the museum itself. I point out how the light through the olive leaves resembles the light in several of the paintings inside.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Nice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ratatouille and Vieux Nice, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
