Port Meadow's wild ponies and open sky
Highlights
- Common land grazed for a thousand years
- Horses and cattle roaming freely
- Grazing rights older than written records
- A natural flooding cycle explained
- Oxford's most open, unbuilt space
About this tour
This session walks Port Meadow, one of the largest and oldest unspoiled areas of common land in England, from the grazing herds to the riverside path along its edge. It covers the ancient grazing rights that still apply here and the natural flooding cycle that keeps the land as it is. It is the most open, unbuilt session the city has to offer.
We start at the meadow's edge with its history, then walk out across the open common towards the grazing herds. Questions about the animals and the grazing rights come up steadily, and I answer with what I have learned from years living beside it. I close with a note on the best time of year to see the meadow flooded.
It suits nature lovers who want genuinely open space rather than another building. It also suits early risers, since the light and the quiet are both best before the day gets going.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.
-
Meadow edge 21 min
The camera opens on the wide flat common, and I explain how it has been grazed continuously for over a thousand years without ever being ploughed.
-
Grazing herds 21 min
Further out, you see horses and cattle grazing freely across the open land, and I point out how commoners' grazing rights here date back to before the Domesday Book.
-
Riverside path 21 min
The route follows the Thames along the meadow's edge, and I explain how flooding here in winter is a normal, expected part of the land's cycle rather than a hazard to worry about.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ploughman's lunch and Osney Island, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
