About this tour

This session moves through four of Brussels's old beer cafes, from wood panelling dating back to the early 1900s to a small bar hidden down a narrow alley. You see lambic and gueuze explained by a former bartender and a kriek poured that is made with whole cherries. It ends off Rue du Marché aux Herbes, past a doorway easy to miss.

The guide checks sound in the first café, then moves bar to bar, explaining the beer styles and the snacks that go with them as they come up. You can ask about brewing, the cafes' history or what to order throughout. A short list of the cafes and their addresses is sent on afterwards.

This suits anyone curious about Belgian beer who wants lambic and gueuze explained before ordering their own. It also suits Brussels regulars looking for cafes off their usual route.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Brussels before heading out.

  2. A wood-panelled beer café 21 min

The camera goes inside a beer café with wood panelling dating back to the early 1900s, bottles of lambic lined along the back wall. A former bartender explains how lambic ferments differently from most other beers.

  3. A kriek poured 21 min

At the next stop the camera follows a kriek being poured, made with whole cherries rather than syrup. The guide explains how the fruit changes the beer over months of ageing in the barrel.

  4. A café off Rue du Marché aux Herbes 21 min

The last stop is a small café tucked down a narrow alley off Rue du Marché aux Herbes, easy to walk past without noticing. The guide talks through the cheese and sausage snacks usually served alongside a glass here.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Brussels: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Belgian waffles and Marolles, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Brussels time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
