Antón Martín market and its old cinema
Highlights
- A market reflecting old and new arrivals
- Madrid's oldest working cinema, still showing films
- An Art Nouveau facade, explained
- Two stops, one short walk
- A neighbourhood read through its market
About this tour
This session covers Mercado de Antón Martín and the Art Nouveau cinema facade right beside it. You see market stalls reflecting the neighbourhood's older and newer communities alongside one of Madrid's oldest working cinemas. The two sit close enough together that they make a natural short session.
We spend most of the time in the market itself, since the stalls reflect the neighbourhood's mix as clearly as anything I show in Lavapiés proper. I explain the cinema's history briefly at the end, since the facade alone tells a good part of the story. Questions about specific stalls come up naturally as we walk.
This suits anyone interested in how a neighbourhood market reflects the people living around it. It also works well as a short session for viewers with limited time.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Madrid before heading out.
-
Mercado de Antón Martín 15 min
The market's stalls sell everything from fresh produce to prepared food from several different cuisines. I point out which stalls have been here longest and which reflect the neighbourhood's more recent arrivals.
-
Cine Doré facade 15 min
Next to the market, the Art Nouveau facade of Madrid's oldest working cinema still shows films most nights. I explain how the building survived long enough to become a listed monument.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Madrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Churros con chocolate and La Latina, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?
Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
