About this tour

This session covers medieval Gamla Stan and the small island of Riddarholmen next to it, moving from Stortorget to the Royal Palace and finishing at Riddarholmen Church. Along the way the camera passes Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the narrowest alley in the old town, and a runestone set into a house wall. It is a close look at the streets where Stockholm began.

The session opens with a sound check, then works through the four stops in the order a walk through the old town would take, taking questions as they come. Afterwards a short list of what was covered is sent over.

This suits anyone drawn to medieval history or old European streets, whether planning a trip to Stockholm or remembering one already taken. It also suits anyone who wants to see the old town at a slower pace than a normal visit allows.

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Stockholm before heading out.

  2. Stortorget 21 min

The camera stands in Stortorget, Gamla Stan's main square, while the guide points out the building facades and tells the story of the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, when scores of nobles were executed here.

  3. Mårten Trotzigs gränd 21 min

Down Mårten Trotzigs gränd, at under a metre wide the narrowest alley in the old town, the camera squeezes through the stone walls, and on Prästgatan above it the guide points out a runestone built into a house wall.

  4. Royal Palace 21 min

Outside the Royal Palace, the camera catches the changing of the guard if the timing allows, and the guide explains how one of Europe's largest palaces still works as the King's official residence.

  5. Riddarholmen Church 21 min

From outside Riddarholmen Church on its small island, the guide explains that this is where Swedish kings and queens have been buried for centuries, and the camera takes in the distinctive cast-iron spire.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Stockholm: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Meatballs (köttbullar) and Gamla Stan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Stockholm time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
