Ilha Deserta, an empty Atlantic beach by boat
Highlights
- An empty Atlantic beach by boat
- Dunes crossing lagoon to ocean side
- A lighthouse ruin further along the sand
- An island that keeps changing shape
- Faro's quietest beach, far from the mainland
About this tour
This session shows Ilha Deserta, a narrow barrier island reached by boat and among the emptiest beaches near Faro. You see the sheltered lagoon side, the dune crossing between the two shores, and the open Atlantic beach where the crowds thin out almost completely. The session begins once the boat has landed rather than showing the crossing itself.
We start with a sound check on the lagoon side, then move dune to beach and back toward the jetty, taking questions at each stage about the tides and the island's shifting shape. I send a short note afterwards on the best conditions to visit.
It suits travellers who want to see an Algarve beach without the usual crowds, and anyone curious about how barrier islands change shape over time. Reaching the island depends on the tide, so timing can shift the session slightly.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 10 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Faro before heading out.
-
The lagoon side 21 min
The camera shows the sheltered lagoon side of Ilha Deserta once we land, dunes and low scrub between the jetty and the ocean beach.
-
The dune crossing 21 min
We cross a boardwalk over the dunes, and I explain why this narrow strip of sand keeps shifting shape from one year to the next.
-
The ocean beach 21 min
You see the open Atlantic side of the island, empty compared with the mainland beaches, and I point out the lighthouse ruin visible further along the sand.
-
Back toward the jetty 21 min
We walk back across the island toward the jetty, and I talk through how the tide affects when boats can land here at all.
-
Your questions 18 min
Time to ask anything about Faro: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 8 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Choco frito (fried cuttlefish) and Waterfront, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 6 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
