I grew up around the Ria Formosa, first on my father's small fishing boat and later leading trips out to the islands once I trained as a guide. Most people picture the Algarve as beaches and cliffs, but this lagoon of channels, salt pans and sandbanks is quieter and stranger than that, full of birds most visitors never notice. On camera I keep the phone low across the water so you see the channels the way a local reads them, and I talk through the tides as they change. Six years guiding out here has not made the light on the lagoon any less worth filming.
