Ria Formosa, channels and birdlife on camera
Highlights
- Centuries-old salt pans
- Birds feeding along the channels
- A lagoon shaped by shifting tides
- Barrier islands seen from the mainland
- A fisherman's daughter's view of the Ria
About this tour
This session walks the boardwalks and salt pans around the Ria Formosa, the lagoon system stretching along the coast either side of Faro. You see the old salt pans, a channel where birds often feed, and finally a wider view toward the barrier islands. I grew up on my father's fishing boat in these same channels.
We start with a sound check once I reach the boardwalk, then move pan to channel to viewpoint, leaving time at each for questions about the birdlife and the tides. I send a short note afterwards naming what we saw that morning.
It suits anyone curious about wetland ecosystems and a quieter side of the Algarve than its beaches. What the camera catches in terms of birdlife depends on the tide and the season, so no specific sighting is guaranteed.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Faro before heading out.
-
The salt pans 21 min
The camera crosses the old salt pans at the lagoon's edge, and I explain how salt harvesting here shaped the coastline for centuries.
-
The channels 21 min
We follow a walkway along one of the main channels, and I point out flamingos or waders if they are feeding nearby that morning.
-
The sandbank view 21 min
From a raised point we look out over the wider lagoon toward the barrier islands, and I explain how the tides reshape the sandbanks through the year.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Faro: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Percebes (goose barnacles) and Cidade Velha, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
