About this tour

This session walks the Cidadela de Cascais, the 16th-century fortress that once guarded the mouth of the Tagus and now holds galleries and shops behind its old walls. You see the seaward wall, the main courtyard and the gatehouse, three points that between them tell the fort's story from garrison to arts centre. Along the way I name the centuries each section of stonework belongs to.

We start with a short check on the signal near the entrance, then move wall to courtyard to gatehouse, pausing at each for questions about the building's history. Toward the end I send a short list of the dates and names covered during the walk.

It suits anyone interested in fortifications and how old military buildings get a second life, as well as travellers curious about Cascais before it was a beach town. It is a walk through the fort's public areas, not a museum tour of any single collection inside it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cascais before heading out.

  2. The seaward wall 17 min

You see the thick 16th-century wall facing the Atlantic, and I explain how it guarded the mouth of the Tagus long before Cascais became a resort town.

  3. The main courtyard 17 min

The camera crosses the open courtyard now used for exhibitions, and I point out where the old garrison buildings met the newer galleries added when the fort was restored.

  4. The gatehouse 17 min

We stop at the old gatehouse, and I show the stonework repairs from different centuries that are still visible if you know where to look.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Cascais: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Arroz de marisco (seafood rice) and Quinta da Marinha, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
