The Venetian Ghetto and Cannaregio
Highlights
- The world's first ghetto, established in 1516
- Tall houses built because the ghetto could not grow
- Five historic synagogues, seen from outside
- The Holocaust memorial in Ghetto Nuovo
- Tintoretto's parish church at Madonna dell'Orto
About this tour
This session follows the Venetian Ghetto and the wider Cannaregio district around it, from the square of Ghetto Nuovo to Tintoretto's parish church at Madonna dell'Orto. You see the tall houses built here because the ghetto could not expand outward, the plain facades of five historic synagogues, and the memorial to what happened to this community in the Second World War. The walk finishes inside a working church rather than a museum.
After the sound check, the guide walks the district in order, pausing at each site for questions and allowing time to sit with the memorial before moving on. A short list of names and dates is sent once the call ends.
This suits anyone with an interest in Jewish history, or in how one small district shaped so much of it.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 10 min

Ghetto Nuovo 21 min
Standing in the square, the guide explains how this became the first ghetto in the world in 1516, and points up at buildings raised several storeys higher than usual because the district could not grow outward.
-
The historic synagogues, from outside 21 min
Walking around the square, the guide points out the plain facades hiding five historic synagogues, each built by a different community that settled here over the centuries.
-
The Holocaust memorial 21 min
At the edge of the square, the camera settles on the memorial reliefs set into the wall, and the guide explains what happened to Venice's Jewish community during the Second World War.
-
Madonna dell'Orto 21 min
Inside this parish church, the guide points out paintings by Tintoretto, who worshipped and is buried here, and explains why he never needed to look far for work.
-
Your questions 18 min
Time to ask anything about Venice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 8 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Baccalà mantecato and San Marco, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
