About this tour

This session walks De Pijp's food streets starting at the Albert Cuyp market, taking in a herring stand, a Surinamese kitchen on Van Ostadestraat and a cheese shop before finishing at a brown café. The guide explains how this neighbourhood's mix of communities shaped what is sold here today. It is a look at everyday De Pijp food rather than a single cuisine.

The session opens with a sound check, then moves between the four stops at market pace, stopping for questions whenever something on a counter catches your eye. A shortlist of what to try follows by message after the call.

This suits anyone curious about Amsterdam beyond the canals, or anyone who likes markets and everyday food streets. It also suits returning visitors who want to see how the neighbourhood has changed.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Albert Cuyp market 21 min

At a stall on the Albert Cuyp market, the camera watches a stroopwafel pressed and cut fresh, and the guide explains how the market has served this neighbourhood since the early twentieth century.

  3. Herring stand 21 min

At a nearby herring stand, the guide shows how the fish is served the Amsterdam way, with chopped onion and pickles on the side, and explains the etiquette locals follow when eating it.

  4. Surinamese kitchen, Van Ostadestraat 21 min

On Van Ostadestraat, the camera looks into a family-run Surinamese kitchen, and the guide explains how roti became a normal De Pijp lunch through the neighbourhood's Surinamese community.

  5. Cheese shop and brown café 21 min

The walk finishes at a cheese shop ageing its own Gouda, then a brown café nearby, where the guide points out the snack menu on the wall and explains what makes a café brown in the first place.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and Jordaan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
