About this tour
This session climbs to Cimiez with an art historian, from the Roman ruins of Cemenelum to the Matisse Museum and the monastery garden where Matisse is buried. You hear about his paper cut-outs and Chagall's Biblical Message paintings, described from outside the museums that hold them. It is Nice's artistic history told on the hill where both painters chose to live.
The guide opens with a sound check, then climbs the hill stop by stop, moving between Roman, religious and artistic history. Questions come in live, and a short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in Matisse and Chagall's later years rather than just their best-known paintings. It also suits viewers planning a Cimiez visit who want the history explained first.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nice before heading out.
-
Cemenelum Roman ruins 21 min
On the way up to Cimiez, the camera passes the Roman ruins of Cemenelum, the amphitheatre and baths that once served the Roman capital of this coast. The guide, an art historian, explains why Matisse and Chagall later chose this same hill to settle.
-
Outside the Matisse Museum 21 min
From outside the Matisse Museum, the guide describes the paper cut-outs held in the collection, the technique Matisse developed late in life when illness kept him from painting standing up.
-
Monastery garden and Matisse's grave 21 min
In the Cimiez monastery garden, among its olive grove, the guide walks to Matisse's grave in the cemetery beyond. She explains why he chose to be buried on this hill rather than in Paris, and closes with the story behind Chagall's Biblical Message paintings, held nearby in the room he designed for them.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Nice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Socca and Le Port, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
