About this tour

This session walks through Galway city, from Shop Street to the old fishing village of the Claddagh. The camera moves past Lynch's Castle, through the Spanish Arch and the last stretch of the medieval walls, and across the river into the Claddagh, where the story of its famous ring comes from. It ends at St Nicholas' Church and a claim tied to Columbus.

After a sound check, the walk moves through the city in the order above, with the guide taking questions about the buildings and the stories attached to them throughout. A short note on the Claddagh ring's meaning goes out once the call ends.

This suits anyone planning a first visit to Galway who wants the layout and the stories before arriving. It also suits anyone who already knows the city and enjoys hearing its older stories told again.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Galway before heading out.

  2. Shop Street and Lynch's Castle 21 min

The camera moves down Shop Street to Lynch's Castle, a fifteenth-century townhouse now housing a bank, and the guide points out the carved stonework still visible on its facade.

  3. Spanish Arch 21 min

At the Spanish Arch, the camera takes in the last stretch of the medieval city walls still standing, right where the old town once met the harbour.

  4. The Claddagh 21 min

Across the river in the Claddagh, once an Irish-speaking fishing village of its own, the camera follows the quieter streets while the guide tells the story behind the Claddagh ring.

  5. St Nicholas' Church 21 min

The walk ends at St Nicholas' Church, where the guide points out the spot Columbus is said to have prayed before setting out, a claim the city has never quite let go of.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Galway: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Galway Bay oysters and Latin Quarter, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
