About this tour

This session follows a Cretan food walk through Chania, from the covered Agora market to a family taverna kitchen. The camera moves between stalls of barley rusk and mizithra, a kitchen folding kalitsounia in Splantzia, and the old Venetian harbour where boureki has its roots. It ends at a taverna table set with local olive oil and raki.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the walk stop by stop with a short pause for questions after each one. Near the end there is time for live questions, and the guide sends a short list of dishes and where to find them once the call ends.

This suits anyone planning a trip to Crete who wants to know what to actually order, or anyone who already knows Chania and wants to see it again. It also suits someone who simply wants to spend some time among market stalls and kitchen smells without leaving home.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Chania before heading out.

  2. Agora Market 21 min

The camera moves through the cross-shaped covered market, built in the early twentieth century, past stalls of barley rusk and mizithra cheese, while the guide shows how a proper dakos is assembled.

  3. Splantzia quarter 21 min

In the quiet lanes of Splantzia, the camera looks in on a kitchen making kalitsounia, small cheese pies finished with a spoon of honey, and the guide explains what tells a good one from a rushed one.

  4. Venetian Harbour 21 min

Along the fourteenth-century harbour built by Venetian rulers, the guide stops by the old arsenals and explains boureki, the courgette and potato bake that belongs to Chania alone.

  5. Family taverna 21 min

At the family taverna, the camera settles on a table of olive oil for tasting and a bottle of raki, and the guide walks through how each is made and when Cretans pour them.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Chania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Graviera cheese and Splantzia, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
