Despina Vardaki

Chania is my town and I think it has the most beautiful harbour in Greece, although people from Rethymno disagree. My family has a small taverna in Splantzia, the old Ottoman quarter, with a plane tree in the square outside and a minaret that has lost its top. I grew up serving tables there and still help on busy nights. I became a guide in 2014 after studying tourism in Heraklion and working in a hotel in Germany for two years. My walks go through the Venetian harbour to the lighthouse, the old Jewish quarter with the Etz Hayyim synagogue, and the knife makers' street, where a few old men still make Cretan daggers.
