About this tour

This session moves through a Kraków vodka bar, setting out rye, potato and wheat vodkas alongside Żubrówka and homemade fruit nalewki. The guide explains vodka's history in Poland since the 1400s and lays out a plate of zakąski, the pickles and cured food that traditionally goes with it. It focuses on the drink's history and customs rather than a tasting session.

The call opens with a sound check, then moves through the three stops at the bar, with the guide explaining each bottle and dish in turn. Questions are welcome throughout, and a short list of names and toasts follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone curious about Polish drinking traditions, whether or not a visit is planned. It also suits anyone who wants the customs explained properly before trying them elsewhere.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Krakow before heading out.

  2. A Kraków vodka bar 21 min

Inside a bar lined with bottles, the guide sets out vodkas made from rye, potato and wheat side by side, and explains how vodka's history in Poland goes back to the 1400s.

  3. Żubrówka and nalewki 21 min

The guide holds up a bottle of Żubrówka, the bison grass vodka, next to a row of homemade fruit nalewki, and explains how families still make their own versions at home.

  4. Zakąski and toasting customs 21 min

On the bar, the guide lays out a plate of zakąski, herring, pickles and smalec on bread, and explains the toasting customs that go with each round, the ones locals actually follow rather than the ones in guidebooks.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Krakow: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Obwarzanek krakowski and Podgórze, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Warsaw time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Questions about this tour

What will the session cover?

The guide walks through Krakow, showing you Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) and St Mary's Basilica live on camera, plus whatever else you would like to see.

What happens if my connection drops?

Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?

Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

Is this suitable if I do not drink?

Yes. Say so when you book and the guide will focus on the atmosphere and venues rather than the drinks list.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
