About this tour

This session walks Zurich's old town from the Chagall windows inside the Fraumünster to Grossmünster, where Huldrych Zwingli preached the Reformation. You see the guild houses along the Limmat from Lindenhof hill, built on the site of the city's original Roman fort. It ends in Niederdorf, at the building where the Dada movement started.

The guide checks sound inside the Fraumünster, then walks the old town bank by bank, explaining each building's role in Zurich's history. Questions can come in about the Reformation, the Romans or Dada throughout the call. A short list of the sites and their dates follows afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in Zurich's history beyond its banks, from the Reformation to twentieth-century art. It also suits former visitors who walked past these buildings without knowing their significance.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Zurich before heading out.

  2. Fraumünster 21 min

Inside the Fraumünster the camera holds on the stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall, their blues filling the plain Romanesque nave with colour. The guide explains how a church without much else drawing visitors became famous for five windows.

  3. Lindenhof hill 21 min

From Lindenhof hill the camera looks down over the guild houses lining the Limmat, on the site of the old Roman fort that first put a settlement here. The guide explains what has been found underneath the terrace.

  4. Grossmünster and Niederdorf 21 min

The camera crosses to Grossmünster, the twin-towered church where Huldrych Zwingli preached the Reformation into Zurich. The guide finishes in Niederdorf, pointing out Cabaret Voltaire, the building where the Dada art movement began in 1916.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Zurich: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (veal in cream sauce) and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

  • Times are shown in Zurich time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
