About this tour

This walk follows York from its walls to Clifford's Tower, taking in the Shambles and the Roman and Viking layers underneath the city along the way. You see a stretch of the mediaeval walls facing York Minster, the butchers' hooks still fixed above shopfronts in the Shambles, and the mound where Clifford's Tower stands above the city. It moves through Roman, Viking and mediaeval York in a single loop of the old centre.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the walls and streets in from Roman to mediaeval York, with an archaeologist joining for the Viking section around Coppergate. Questions come along the way, and a short list of the sites and their dates follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how many different cities sit on top of one another in York. It also suits those who have visited before and want the history explained properly rather than in passing.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of York before heading out.

  2. The city walls 21 min

From a stretch of the mediaeval city walls, the camera looks across to York Minster, the guide pointing out the Roman column that still stands near the Minster's south side.

  3. The Shambles 21 min

In the Shambles, the camera holds on the butchers' hooks still fixed above some of the shopfronts, the guide explaining what the street was used for before it became what it is now.

  4. Clifford's Tower 21 min

The walk ends at Clifford's Tower, standing on its mound above the city, where the guide tells the story of what happened here in 1190.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about York: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Yorkshire pudding and Shambles Quarter, worth a slower look.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
