About this tour

This session moves through the Schanzenviertel's food scene, from a Portuguese bakery to a chip shop known for its homemade sauces and a small brewery near Rote Flora. The camera follows the food from stall to counter while the guide explains where each dish comes from. Rote Flora itself gets its own stop, as the building that still shapes the district's politics.

The call opens with a short sound check, then follows the street food by food, pausing at each stop for questions. A short list of the shops and their specialities goes out by message once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in Hamburg's food beyond the harbour classics, as well as anyone curious about a district known for its independent politics. It also works well around a mealtime of your own.

  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Hamburg before heading out.

  2. Portuguese bakery 21 min

A Portuguese bakery in the Schanzenviertel traces back to the dockworkers who settled here decades ago, and the guide watches a tray of pastries come out while explaining that history.

  3. Chip shop and Labskaus 21 min

At a chip shop locals call legendary, the guide watches a portion of Pommes get its homemade sauces and, at a second stop, sees Labskaus made the traditional way, corned beef mashed with potato and beetroot.

  4. Rote Flora and microbrewery 21 min

Outside Rote Flora, an occupied former theatre turned into a symbol of the district's politics, the guide explains the building's history before ending at a small brewery pouring its own craft beer.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Hamburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Aalsuppe (eel soup) and St. Pauli, worth a slower look.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
