About this tour

This session follows the nineteenth-century covered passages of the Right Bank, the glass-roofed arcades built when Parisians wanted to shop and stroll without the rain. You see the mosaic floor of Galerie Vivienne, the toy and cane shopfronts of Passage Jouffroy, and the quieter Passage Verdeau at the far end. Between them the guide crosses Passage des Panoramas, the oldest of the group.

The call opens with a short sound check, then moves passage to passage in the order a walker would take them, pausing at each shopfront the guide wants to show. You can ask questions as you go, and a short list of the passages and addresses follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone who likes Paris away from the boulevards, or who remembers wandering these arcades on a rainy afternoon. It also works for those planning a visit and wanting a route to follow themselves.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Paris before heading out.

  2. Galerie Vivienne 21 min

The camera holds on the mosaic floor and glass roof of Galerie Vivienne, one of the grandest of the passages. The guide points out the neoclassical stucco and the old wine shop that has traded here for decades.

  3. Passage des Panoramas 21 min

Inside Passage des Panoramas, the oldest covered arcade in the city, the guide walks past stamp and postcard dealers and a row of narrow restaurant fronts wedged between the shopfronts.

  4. Passage Jouffroy 21 min

Passage Jouffroy opens onto a toy shop window and a cane and umbrella shop that has sold walking sticks since the passage was built. The guide points out the ironwork roof overhead.

  5. Passage Verdeau 21 min

The walk ends in Passage Verdeau, quieter than its neighbours, where dealers in old postcards and prints keep their windows lit even after the shops close for the night.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Paris: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Soupe à l'oignon and Montmartre, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
