About this tour

This session walks Cabanyal, Valencia's old fishermen's quarter, from the tiled facades of Carrer de Josep Benlliure to the Malvarrosa promenade. You see what survived the 1875 fire and the decades-long fight against a planned avenue through the neighbourhood. It is a working-class quarter explained through its houses and its guilds.

The guide opens with a sound check, then walks street by street, pointing out which tiles and facades tell which story. Questions come in as the walk goes, and a short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how a neighbourhood fights to save itself. It also suits viewers who love tiled architecture and coastal quarters.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Valencia before heading out.

  2. Carrer de Josep Benlliure 21 min

The camera moves along Carrer de Josep Benlliure, stopping at the tiled facades that give Cabanyal its colour. The guide points out how each house's tiles were chosen to mark out its owner's trade or status.

  3. Carrer de la Reina and the barracas 21 min

On Carrer de la Reina, the guide explains the barracas, the thatched fishermen's houses that once stood here before a fire in 1875 destroyed much of the quarter. He shows what was rebuilt afterwards and what has survived.

  4. The fight against the avenue 21 min

The guide walks the stretch of Cabanyal that was slated for demolition to extend an avenue through to the sea. He explains the decades-long campaign that eventually stopped the plan and saved the neighbourhood's grid.

  5. Fishermen's guilds and Malvarrosa 21 min

The walk finishes on the Malvarrosa promenade, where the guide talks through the fishermen's guilds that once ran Cabanyal and the Semana Santa Marinera, the fishing community's own Holy Week procession.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Valencia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Horchata (orxata) and Ruzafa, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
