About this tour

This session follows Bergen's seafood trade, from the harbourside fish market to the story of klippfisk, the dried cod that built the city's wealth, and a fish cake shop making the same recipe since 1950. The guide gives a plain account of what is actually local versus shipped in, including an honest look at whale meat still sold in some shops. It is a working look at Bergen's seafood trade rather than a tasting menu.

The call opens with a sound check, then moves between the three stops at market pace, with time for questions about what is on the counters. A short list of what to look for follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in Norwegian food history or fishing, whether planning a visit or not. It also suits anyone curious about a more complicated side of Norwegian food culture.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bergen before heading out.

  2. Fish market 21 min

At the harbourside fish market, the camera moves past counters of shrimp, crab and smoked salmon, and the guide explains what is actually caught locally versus shipped in from further along the coast.

  3. Klippfisk and cod history 21 min

Standing near stacked boards of klippfisk, the guide explains how salted, dried cod built much of Bergen's wealth and where the trade sent this fish once it left the docks.

  4. Fish cake shop 21 min

Inside a shop that has made fish cakes the same way since 1950, the guide watches the mixture go into the pan and gives an honest account of Norway's whale meat trade, still sold in some shops nearby.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Bergen: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bergen fish cakes (fiskekaker) and Nordnes, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
