About this tour

This session climbs and descends Blankenese, from the Treppenviertel's captains' houses and fishermen's cottages to the view at Süllberg and the Elbe beach below. The camera follows the same steps a resident would use every day, since no road reaches most of these houses. The guide explains why the district looks the way it does and ends at the ferry pier watching the river traffic.

The call opens with a short sound check, then follows the steps up and back down, with time for questions about the district along the way. A short list of the viewpoints and the ferry timetable follows by message once the call ends.

This suits anyone who likes an unusual walk with a view at the top, whether planning a visit to Hamburg or simply curious about a district built without roads. It also works for anyone who wants to watch the Elbe traffic from somewhere quiet.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Hamburg before heading out.

  2. Treppenviertel steps 21 min

The Treppenviertel climbs the hillside on close to five thousand steps, past captains' houses and old fishermen's cottages built into the slope, and the guide explains why the district still has no roads wide enough for cars.

  3. Süllberg viewpoint 21 min

From the top at Süllberg, the view opens out over the Elbe and the ships moving along it, and the guide points out how far you can see on a clear day.

  4. Elbe beach and ferry pier 21 min

Down at the sand beach, container ships pass close enough to feel their wake, and the walk ends at the Blankenese ferry pier, where the guide watches a fish roll being made at the kiosk there.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Hamburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fischbrötchen (fish sandwich) and St. Pauli, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
