  • Skillingsbolle, the Bergen bun that reached Oslo

About this tour

This session moves through Mathallen and the streets around it, from a brown cheese counter to a fish soup stall and a counter selling cured meats and mountain flatbread. The guide explains what separates Norwegian versions of these foods from their better-known neighbours. It is a food hall walk rather than a full city tour.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the three stops through the food hall and out onto the street, with time for questions about what is on each counter. A short list of what to try later follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone curious about Norwegian food before or after a trip, or anyone who enjoys a good food hall wherever they are. It also works well around a mealtime at home.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oslo before heading out.

  2. Brown cheese counter 21 min

Inside Mathallen, the guide holds up three kinds of brown cheese side by side, and explains the difference in sweetness and texture between them.

  3. Fish soup stall 21 min

At a stall known for its fish soup, the camera watches the ladle go into the pot, and the guide explains what makes the Norwegian version different from soups found further south.

  4. Cured meats and bakery 21 min

The walk finishes at a counter selling cured meats and flatbread from the mountains, with the guide pointing out a local craft beer and a skillingsbolle, the Bergen-style cinnamon bun that has made its way to Oslo bakeries.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Oslo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew) and Grünerløkka, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Oslo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
