About this tour

This session walks Zhenski Pazar, Sofia's oldest market, through to a family bakery and a boza stand nearby. You see banitsa coming fresh out of the oven and boza poured for regulars who grew up on it. It follows a route built around what locals actually buy here.

The guide checks sound at the market entrance, then moves stall by stall, explaining each item as it is sold to someone else. You can ask about ingredients, prices or how a dish is normally eaten throughout the walk. A short list of stalls worth seeking out is sent on afterwards.

This suits anyone planning a food-focused visit to Sofia who wants the market mapped before arriving. It also suits former visitors curious what has changed at their old favourite stalls.

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Sofia before heading out.

  2. Zhenski Pazar 21 min

The camera moves through Zhenski Pazar, Sofia's oldest market, past stalls of peppers, herbs and jars of lyutenitsa relish. The guide explains which stalls have run in the same family for generations.

  3. A family bakery 21 min

At a family bakery the camera follows trays of banitsa coming out of the oven, ready to be served with a spoon of yoghurt. The guide explains the layers of filo and cheese that make it Sofia's everyday pastry.

  4. A boza stand 21 min

At a stand nearby the camera watches boza, a thick fermented grain drink, being poured for customers used to its taste. The guide explains how it is made and points toward a stall selling shopska salad and kavarma for lunch.

  5. Your questions 14 min

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Banitsa and City Centre, worth a slower look.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
