The church at the centre of the old town has outlasted fires, rebuilding and a changing waterline, and I have spent years reading the layers still visible in its walls. I studied archaeology before moving into guiding, which is also where my interest in the island's earlier history comes from. On camera I try to hold on one detail long enough for it to actually register rather than panning past it. I keep a formal pace through my calls, laying out the history in order rather than jumping around, since the story only makes sense that way.
